The RED TENT by Anita Diamant
It is a first-person narrative that tells the story of Dinah, daughter of Jacob and sister of Joseph. She is a minor character in the Bible, but the author has broadened her story. The book's title refers to the tent in which women of Jacob's tribe must, according to the ancient law, take refuge whilemenstruating or giving birth, and in which they find mutual support and encouragement from their mothers, sisters and aunts.
Although fiction, it reads like non-fiction and I would imagine the story told depicts what life really could have been like in that time period and I found it fascinating. Dinah, the only daughter of Leah, tells her life story. Beginning with her father's heritage and continuing into her childhood, her adulthood, and so forth. She becomes known as the "great" midwife.
I really enjoyed this book, very different from what I have ever read, and would recommend.
