A Town Like Alice (Also titled, The Legacy) by Nevil Shute
A Town Like Alice (U.S. title: The Legacy) It is an economic development, romance and (initially) a war novel. A young Englishwoman after serving as a prisoner of World War II in Malaya emigrates to Australia to be with a fellow prisoner she romantically loves, where she attempts, by investing her substantial financial inheritance, to generate economic prosperity in a small outback community — to turn it into "a town like Alice" i.e. Alice Springs. The story is told by Jean Paget's trustee of her inheritance. The first half of the book moved very quickly as we follow Jean Paget as a prisoner during WWII and continued as she travelled to Australia to connect with a man she met during the war. It did begin to slow down a tad, but I am still happy with the story, the writing and the finish.
And while I was waiting for "A Town Like Alice" at the library, I finally picked up this book that my MIL gave me. Perhaps you have seen the movie.............but the book is not really a story, but rather an autobiography written by the actual man who lived it. Ten weeks after their wedding on 18 September 1993, the couple was in an automobile accident in which Krickitt suffered brain trauma, which erased memories of her romance with Kim as well as their marriage. Kim is still deeply in love with his wife, although she views him as a stranger after the accident. According to the couple, their faith in Jesus and their wedding vows before God kept them together.
It was a really fast read (I read it within a few hours). I enjoyed it, but it wasn't anything that I would scream and shout about. But definitely something interesting if you were watching a 20/20 special or a primetime.
