State of Wonder: by Ann Patchett
It is about a drug company employee who journeys to Brazil, to bring back information about seemingly miraculous drug research being conducted there by Dr. Swenson on behalf of the company. The novel opens with Marina Singh reading a letter from Dr. Annick Swenson to Mr. Fox. Anders Eckman, her co-worker at the pharmaceutical company Vogel, has reportedly died at Dr. Swenson’s research site in the Amazon rainforest. Eckman’s widow begs Marina to find out what happened, and Mr. Fox agrees to send her. Mr. Fox’s other motive is that Dr. Swenson has been given a blank check to conduct research into a new miracle drug, and refuses to inform him of her progress. So we follow Marina Singh on her journey to the Amazon to learn about Dr. Swenson and Dr. Eckman, but she discovers much much more.
The book’s central issue, its unresolved rivalry, is the dragon of a teacher who lurks somewhere in every student’s academic history. It is a suspenseful jungle adventure with an unexpected ending and other assorted surprises. Patchett has a gift in creating memorable characters and truly ingenious plot. It would be at least a "B" for me.
